How Did You Sleep Tonight

As I was falling asleep tonight
in my bed, all snug and warm
I thought of our soldiers in this terrible fight
and how they were sleeping; days or nights or in a storm.

I sleep all night without any fear
while these brave men and women sleep when they can
a few minutes there, a few hours here
their troubled thoughts they try to mend.

Where I sleep sound, their sleep is cautious and light
they're dirty and gritty and in a deplorable state
at the slightest disturbance, ready to spring up and fight
an enemy who is full of hate.

The fact that I sleep peacefully in my bed
is because of our soldiers, men and women alike
who put their lives on the line and forging ahead
go where they're needed, no matter where the fight.

They fight for freedom, not only for me
but for a people who has long lived with fear;
people who have been oppressed, murdered and not really free
but at long last, their freedom is near.

Americans enjoy many freedoms, speech being one
but in Iraq, that freedom will only bring death
forced to live under a evil tyrant and his sons
speaking out against this regime brings sure arrest.

Our brave soldiers are willing to fight and die
to destroy an evil enemy and bring true freedom
to a people who has only known lies
to live without fear; in peace and stop being numb.

Our soldiers are mighty, deadly and very bold
they keep on fighting, even after they fall.
But they're also compassionate; little children they hold;
they'll share their food and water with one and all.

Thank you, God, for these brave men and women who
grab what sleep they can , whenever and wherever
so the people in Iraq can sleep anew
feeling as peaceful and safe in their beds as in mine I do.

Soon the people in Iraq can sleep safely in their beds
knowing that when they awake, there will be no fear.
Not dreading what new terrors will lie ahead
but looking forward to a new future here.

For all our brave men and women I give God thanks
ALL the Coalition forces, no matter what country or ranks
let them know, God, how much they're loved
not only by us, but by You above.

When I first saw these pictures, I thought, "How snug and safe and comfortable I am, sleeping in MY bed, while these brave men and women were sleeping, (if one can call it that...more likely brief rest periods or cautious sleep, ready to spring at the slightest disturbance) in such deplorable conditions. The fact that I was able to sleep peacefully in my bed was because these brave men and women were willing to put their lives on the line not only to maintain that safety for me, but to bring freedom to the Iraqi people, who has long lived under oppression, fear, torture, gassing, and death from their own leader, Saddam Hussein, and his regime. Americans enjoy many freedoms, including the freedom of speech, but in Iraq, that freedom will bring death to any who speaks out again that evil regime.

I enjoy a peaceful sleep at night at the cost of our brave soldiers, in ALL the armed forces, men and women alike, who DON'T enjoy a peaceful night's sleep. They are willing to put themselves through this hardship, including the risk of death, to bring a new found freedom to a people that has long been oppressed, murdered, tortured and gassed by the very leaders they trusted. They put themselves in harm's way to destroy an evil enemy, but yet still have the compassion and love to lift up a little boy or girl to comfort them, and make friends with them, or to share their own food and water with people that have been ignored by their own leaders.

I thank God for ALL of our military forces; United States and England, who are willing to sacrifice all so that in the end, the people of Iraq can go to sleep at night, feeling just as peaceful and safe in their beds as I do in my own bed...so they can go to sleep knowing that tomorrow they can wake up, not dreading what the new day will bring, but actually looking forward to it!!!
